How to improve your essay writing skills

Many students struggle with writing essays because they feel as though there isn’t enough guidance on how to write effectively. I have a few tips that I would like to share with you that may help.

    Plan
I cannot stress this enough. I have noticed that many students have undervalued the importance of a plan. In order to write a great essay, there must be a strong plan. A plan helps you to see the wood through the trees, so to speak! The benefits of writing a plan is as follows: your essay structure will be clear and focused. It will cut down the amount of time you spend writing altogether because you know what you are going to discuss and you have a clear direction. Overall, having a plan will improve your essay.

    Focus
Often we get side-tracked when writing a point. We tend to write our thoughts onto paper without actually thinking it through carefully. Each paragraph must have a clear focus and it should not deviate into another topic. This is why it is so important to plan because it will force you to treat each paragraph as an individual topic in its own right. Always question your own points; do they make sense? Is this focused? Have I gone into enough detail through the analysis here?

    Investigate
one golden tip that I always remind my students is this: treat your essay like an investigation. This will put you in a frame of mind that encourages exploration and discussion. In order for an essay to thrive and engage the reader, there must be a variety of topics that come under discussion. You must include various perspectives in order to show a broad understanding of the subject.  When writing an introduction, I would ask myself these questions: what are you going to explore, and what do you intend to find? For the conclusion, I would also ask myself this: after having explored chosen topic, what have I found? How has this enhanced my understanding of the text and the writer’s intentions?
