Many key stage two students will be taken their 11 plus exam this September. With only 6 months to go, we thought we would give you a few tips on how to help your child prepare for the 11 Plus exam.

    Start Early
This is a crucial point that cannot be stressed enough, especially during the summer. Throughout July  to August, it is strongly recommended that you set aside some time every week to focus on revision for the 11 Plus. During the summer holidays, it can be very easy to lose sight of and even forget the 11 plus. To avoid this, make sure you plan for some time to revise over the following areas to keep it fresh in your child’s mind:

    English (comprehension)
    Verbal reasoning
    Maths
    Non-verbal reasoning

    Identify the areas of struggle
Your son or daughter may not feel 100% confident in all four areas above. Ask them to communicate with you about what they find difficult and focus on assisting them with these areas. If you feel you cannot support them, find a tutor that can or someone who you know and trust to help you.

Turn revision into a fun activity
During the summer holidays, revision is the last thing that your child will want to do. Howevre, it doesn’t have to be this way! A good strategy to counteract their resistance to revision is to turn it into a fun game. For example, instead of testing them with numerous exam papers, why not turn the questions into a quiz format. For example, you can create a quiz about grammar and punctuation. This will engage them and make revision less painless.

    Create a plan
You may feel as though there is never enough time in the day to do everything and to help your child prepare for the 11 plus exams. You can create a timetable and schedule in revision dates and times for both you and your child. It is recommended that revision should not exceed beyond an hour as it will be ineffective. Schedule bite-size revision time from now until the exam to give your child a steady routine that will maintain their level of engagement with revision practise.
